Beverley Anglo French Society History

The first meeting of the Beverley Anglo-French Society took place in September 1992 at The Tiger Inn, Beverley.  The Society has continued to host a programme of events each year since including reciprocal visits between Beverley and Nogent sur Oise, a town about an hour’s drive north of Paris.  The enthusiasm of the Society’s members and the links made in Nogent sur Oise led to an official  twinning agreement between the two towns.

Beverley/Nogent sur Oise Twinning Agreement

The roots of the Beverley-Nogent twinning stem from the links made in the 1990s by Gillian Roux (a native of Beverley) and her husband, Daniel, who was Deputy Mayor of Nogent at that time.  The couple forged links with local head teachers with a view to promoting different exchanges and consequently a formal twinning association was established.   Mr Tony Knight from Beverley and Mme Brigitte Vigliano from Nogent were instrumental in this process.

In 1997, in the absence of a Mayor and Town Council, the then Chief Executive of the East Riding Council signed the twinning charter of behalf of Beverley.  The formal twinning ceremony took place on 2 May 1998 in Nogent in the presence of the Mayor of Beverley, the Mayor of Nogent, and the President of the Beverley Anglo-French Society.
